We first became interested in offering a qualification in teaching English as a second language some time ago, and investigated many of the certificate programs currently available. We decided that the SIT course was the best course for our purposes for several reasons. One is that class sizes are small (12 participants to a course.) Another is SIT’s focus on experiential learning and reflective teaching practice- the abilities that we feel are most essential to help new teachers of EFL to continue to grow and develop, not only during the course, but for as many years as they decide to continue to teach. Who should take this course? This course is intended for participants who wish to learn to teach English as a foreign language or to expand their skills in this area. It is appropriate for both beginning and experienced ESOL teachers interested in developing and improving their abilities through the School for International Training's approach to reflective practice. While it is anticipated that the majority of applicants will be native speakers of English, this is not a requirement. However, all participants are required to have a level of English high enough to be credible teaching even very advanced students, in all language areas (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Teaching experience is not required, but experience learning languages, and love of learning languages, will be helpful. What is the course like? This 130-hour intensive course will take up most of your time for four calendar weeks. Participants will be introduced to many aspects of EFL teaching, through a variety of classroom sessions, assignments, observed practice teaching, observation, and reflection on practice teaching sessions. Due to the intensive nature of the course, it is important that participants have good organizational skills, as well as the interpersonal skills required to be an active, supportive member of the trainee group. Cost and what is included? The training course costs $1500. EIL Ecuador also offers accommodation (homestay or hostel), meals, and Spanish instruction at additional costs. I´m interested in the program. What should I do now? If you feel that the SIT TESOL Certificate course through EIL Ecuador may be right for you, please write to Shirley Mantilla, our trainner SIT TESOL.
